TikTok Provides The Community Power to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a new feature that permits them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service announced that it currently hosts more than 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a widespread rollout. This development comes amid a rise in AI-generated material, spurred by new video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that nearly a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site primarily display content made by AI. A considerable share of this material is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for poor-quality, factory-style content that is frequently absurd or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to science explainers, and we intend to give people the option to see more or less of that, based on their own likes,” said a platform representative.

Scale of AI Content

The platform disclosed that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its service labeled as AI-generated. In total, more than 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the platform every day, making AI-generated material a minor percentage of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be capable of reduce or increase the level of artificial media they watch by accessing the topic control option in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be modified under the filter include politics, clothing, aesthetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies mandate creators to tag convincing AI-made content, and it prohibits dangerous AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the app will from now on add an “AI-made” tag to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This measure is designed to stop users from trying to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also introducing a $2m educational fund for experts and groups to produce educational content about ethical AI use. This program will support non-profit groups dedicated to training computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has justified its moderation strategy, during debate over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in the UK. The company is planning to eliminate hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in London, with labor groups and internet security professionals expressing worry that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most distressing content before it has to be seen by people. The platform stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the past year due to the use of its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
