Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
