Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
